This publication is substantially comprised of evidence given by the author - a director of the Dublin & South Eastern Railway - to the Vice Regal Commission on Irish
Railways of 1906.
The book is a detailed look at the difficulties faced by the railway companies in Ireland due to a myriad of factors, not least of which were the small size of the island
and the lack of natural resources. The author analysed the railway systems of other countries to ascertain if best practice examples could be applied to Ireland and
any recommendations for improvement are made in his evidence.
A brief summary of the previous three inquiries into railways in Ireland is given along with their recommendations.
As with most Government inquiries, the ensuing report sits on a shelf and nothing is done about it. The Vice Regal Commission on Irish Railways of 1906 was no
different, except perhaps that 18 years after its report was published, the railways of the Irish Free State were merged into one entity. This had more to do with
following the example of Britain in merging its railways into the 'Big Four'.
